I have been painting for over 25 years. I am a South Carolina native, and received a bachelor’s in fine arts from the University of Georgia in Athens and a master’s in fine arts from the University of Texas in Austin, where I have lived since 1986.

I enjoy painting still lifes from set ups in my studio. Still lifes are a good vehicle for exploring how color works, and color is one of the things I enjoy most about painting. I paint interior scenes as well as still lifes, and I also like to include objects in the interior scenes, painting just a few objects or groups of objects. I sometimes like to put objects together that don’t have an obvious relation to each other, so that a viewer might see them out of their ordinary context. Some of the objects have personal or symbolic meaning. I use traditional perspective in some of my paintings, and in others I distort it so that the painting has unusual shifts in perspective and viewpoints.

In the interior scenes, I use large flat planes in the painting, such as a wall or floor, to explore color transitions, subtle or more obvious. Some of the paintings, such as the night interiors, are dominated by one color, such as black, broken up by lines of other colors, or an object, or other structures, such as a window or door. I like to paint night scenes because I think it’s interesting how the darkness obscures and unifies what we see. I also build up the surfaces of parts of my paintings with layers of color and paint so that there is an interesting texture. A couple of my paintings, including one of my latest paintings, “Pier,” are of architectural structures. In “Pier,” there is a view of sky through the pier supports. “Arches” shows a structure that mirrors itself in the bottom part of the painting.

I enjoy and am excited about art and have many other ideas for more paintings. I will add new paintings to this website as I produce more work. Thank you for visiting my website, and if you are interested in any of my paintings, please contact me.
